We visited Geronimo's grave on a recent visit to Fort Sill to attend one of my oldest and dearest friend's retirement ceremony after 29 years of service to our country. The Apache Cemetery is a beautiful, serene resting place, right on the banks of Beef Creek. I wish I could post a photo. The legend is that when you visit Geronimo's grave you bring and leave him gifts of tobacco, and his family you leave coins. Don't take anything from their graves or you will bear the wrath of Geronimo!!
I am torn on this. The grave of this important historical individual - the great Chief of the Apache tribe is in a P.O.W grave yard. That seems wrong somehow... on the other hand the spot is beautiful, peaceful and very dignified. The Chief is buried surrounded by his immediate family and brave Apache warriors. That seems right somehow... Anyway, definitely a place to visit if you are in the neighbourhood (it is a bit of the beaten track...). Remember to get a visitor's pass to get on the Army Base - it is not difficult or hard, just a formality.
Several sites at Ft. Sill, so might plan at least a couple of hours. You MUST stop at the Visitors Center to get a pass, which is at Rogers Lane (HWY 62) & Sheridan Road. And bring some mosquito repellent. Apache Cemetary is out in a wooded field.....but worth fighting off the critters!!
Beautiful and sad at the same time very well kept
Very well maintained.
